Applying for a new job is like going through an audition! Lights, Camera & Action

October 2, 2017

Preparing for an interview takes a lot more than Googling a list of interview questions. You have to make a great first impression that starts with the initial contact, the CV. As you would expect you will also need to know your script before coming on stage (do all the research you can on the company and role).

When you do get the all important audition, you will need to be ready with your script and look the part (no wrinkled outfits in this scene).

To help you get ready I have the following tips for you in preparation for your audition. If you follow these simple tips you will knock them dead at the audition and get that lead role.

Check your wardrobe and have the right costume ready.

1. Plan the perfect outfit, it is important to always wear a business outfit regardless of the role. You can never go wrong in wearing a business costume to your first audition. You always want to be the best dressed person in the room.

2. As with all leading roles you will need to make sure you look picture perfect. Make sure you get your costume cleaned, pressed, and tailored.

3. Don't forget about the little things. It’s so easy to concentrate on your costume and forget your accessories. Make sure you shine your shoes, check for loose hems, and make sure your fingernails look manicured.

4. As with all starts it’s so important to look your best. Spend time on pampering, because looking your best helps you feel your best. Make sure you have had your haircut and if you’re a male that you have had a shave or trimmed your beard. If you’re a female make sure that your make up is suited to the leading role you are auditioning for, not too much make up and not too little.

5. Have a copy of your CV in hand with a couple of spares in your folder. You never know who you'll be meeting with, and you want to have your resume ready to go in case you're asked for it.

Know Your Audience
6. Spend a few hours learning everything you can about the film (company). Talk to friends, contacts, and your recruiter about the company. Go on the internet and research the company and spend time reading about the culture, their strategy and what services they offer.

7. No matter what role you’re auditioning for you should, if possible experience the company as a customer before your first interview. Make contact with the company, enquire about the products and services.

8 Before your audition, get a list of the people you’re meeting with from the company. Check their LinkedIn profile and read their background and what role they play in the movie that you are auditioning for. You should always have some questions that are specific to each interviewer: Ask for details about his/her focus at the company, discuss current events or topics of interest specific to the area.

Anticipate the Questions You'll Be Asked in your leading role —and How to Answer Them
9. Even if you if you are a seasoned actor it’s essential to spend time thinking carefully about what skills and accomplishments you have achieved.

10. Have an answer to "tell me about yourself!" ready to go. Interviewers often ask it at the start to break the ice.

11. You can easily find lists of common interview questions relating to your script on the Internet or by asking your recruiter for some sample questions. It is so important to write a few dots points against the most common asked questions to prepare you for the initial scene.

12. During your audition, you may be asked why you are interested in applying for this particular role. To make sure you are able to clearly articulate this in your audition and try to link it back to your role, identify a couple of key factors that make it a great fit for you.

13. Don't just think about how you'll answer certain questions; practice looking in the mirror and answering them out loud. This prep work will help you clarify your thoughts and make you much more comfortable during the interview.
